CROSS AT YOUR OWN RISK

-

SPEEDING vehicles in Jalan Sungai Tua, Taman Selayang, in Batu Caves, Selangor, are making patients to the Selayang Baru Health Clinic fear for their lives.

Salmiah, who was visiting the clinic with her daughter late Wednesday evening, said crossing the road was a challenge as drivers accelerated on the fourlane road.

“I believe pedestrians have the right of way, especially when there’s a zebra crossing, but it seems like drivers do not follow the rules .

“I normally visit the clinic in the morning and the traffic then is horrifying,” she said.

She said there were four schools in the road and many factories in the area.

“People typically visit health clinics in the morning and they include pregnant mothers, babies and the elderly.

“How can they safely cross the road when motorists are speeding? This road is an accident area. The authorities concerned should do something about it,” she said.

Checks by Actionline saw people coming out of the clinic and trying to scamper across the road.

More than 100m from the clinic is an overhead walkway, but its distance from the clinic is daunting for some clinic patrons.

ACTIONLINE:

Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) plans to install a speedbreaker on the road, especial- ly near the clinic.

MPS president Suliman Abd Rahman said the council would install it early next year.

“We are aware of the problems faced by residents and patients of the clinic in Taman Selayang.

“The council wishes to remind motorists to be responsible when in the area,” he said.

Suliman said drivers should always yield to pedestrians crossing the road.

“Drive carefully and slowly in areas such as these.

“It is best if motorists drive more responsibly and pay more attention,” he added.
