Upset over illegal dumpsite
A PARCEL of land in Kampung Batu Uban, George Town, has been turned into an illegal dumpsite.
A villager, who preferred anonymity, claimed that the land was once dotted with houses before it was acquired by a private developer nine years ago.
“When the previous residents moved away, they left some unwanted stuff. A few years later, people began dumping rubbish there.
“Some foreign workers can be seen cleaning up the area, from time to time, but people continue to use it as a dumpsite.”
He claimed the developer had planned to build a high-end condominium on the property, but no construction work had taken place.
The villager said he had sold his property and would move out soon.
“I am worried that the area will become an Aedes mosquito-breeding ground.
“The spot has become an eyesore and the stench is terrible after it rains.
“I am moving out from this place because it does not offer a conducive environment.”

A Penang Island City Council spokesman said the council had alerted the health department to monitor the area and ensure that it did not turn into an Aedes mosquito-breeding site.
“If it is private-owned land, we will send a notice to the landowner to make sure the property is kept clean.”
