Bukit Relau hiking trail, facilities in sorry state

-

HIKERS are unhappy over the state of the 400m hiking trail and facilities at Penang’s Bukit Relau.

Entrepreneur Ahmad Basri Abdullah, 51, said the trail was riddled with potholes.

“This may look like a small issue, but there have been cases where medical teams faced a tough time bringing down hikers who fainted (while going uphill),” he told the New Straits Times yesterday.

Basri also said a restroom, located at the trail’s halfway point, was inoperable.

He said there was no water supply to the restroom, and that hikers had to bring their own toilet paper.

Some hikers, he added, were forced to substitute leaves for toilet paper after relieving themselves.

“Not only was the restroom built at an unsuitable location, it is also unusable.

“It has since been locked and we have no idea who is in charge of maintaining it.”

Basri said the exercise facilities atop Bukit Relau had rusted, adding that there were no toilets or water pipes installed at the hill’s peak.

“These are basic necessities at any hiking trail.

“This particular trail is used not only by Malaysians, but also foreigners.

“It is a shame that no one is taking the effort to restore these amenities.

“Sometimes, we have to fork out our own money to fix some things but we cannot do much.”
