NUTP PROPOSES DO'S AND DONT'S FOR CODE OF ETHICS
Do’s and don’ts will serve as guide on proper conduct in dealing with teachers
THE National Union of Teaching Profession (NUTP) Malaysia has proposed 15 do’s and eight don’ts to be outlined in the code of ethics for parents and guardians.
Under the code, parents or guardians must consult or refer to the school authorities first on any matters concerning their children.
The parents or guardians are not allowed to bring helmets or any harmful objects that may pose a threat to safety.
NUTP president Kamarozaman Abd Razak said: “The school authorities have the right to contact the police if this is breached.”
Parents or guardians were also not allowed to send threatening messages to teachers or school authorities via email, text message, voice note, phone calls or through their social media account, he said.
“These are among the guidelines prepared by NUTP through discussions with our members and non-governmental organisations like the Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation, UNIMalaysia Labour Centre, parents-teachers associations, police, Yayasan Guru Tun Hussein Onn and Sarawak Teachers’ Union,” he said at Wisma NUTP here yesterday.
Kamarozaman said he hoped that the Education Ministry would extend its invitation for NUTP to submit the proposal and ensure the code could be implemented soon.
The code of ethics would serve as a guideline for parents and guardians on their conduct with teachers and school authorities.
It would ensure that teachers’ dignity was protected and for schools to be a safe place for all.
“This code is not only for schools, but also for educational institutions like matriculations, vocational colleges and teacher training colleges.”
He said once the ministry approved the code, parents would receive a copy of it to ensure that they were well-informed.
The move on the proposal came after a 44-year-old teacher, Azizan Manap, was charged at the Seremban magistrate’s court for slapping a student in April.
However, he was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal after the prosecution received instructions from the Attorney-General’s Chambers to withdraw the charge.
Kamarozaman hoped that the book, Procedures for Principals and Teachers for School Discipline, will be updated and made available in all schools.
“The book, which contains related laws and guidelines for teachers, was first published in 1981 and updated in 1988.
“Since then, it was never updated and some schools do not have this book.
“The book is not available in the market or at the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka,” he said, adding that he hoped the Education Ministry would update the book and ensure that it was available at all schools.
