KUANTAN: “I want to meet my mother and beg for her forgiveness.” These words were uttered by the accused after the Sessions Court here sentenced him to jail yesterday for assaulting his mother with a lawnmower handle last week.

Mohd Rafi Ab Aziz broke down when judge Siti Aminah Ghazali sentenced him to seven years’ jail and three strokes of the rotan.

The 25-year-old had pleaded guilty to injuring Mea’ah Abd Majid, 64, in their home at Felda Bukit Sagu 01 here at 5pm last Thursday.

On the day of the incident, the village chief, Maznan @ Maginan Pabir @ Fadzil, was informed that Rafi had injured Mea’ah.

Hearing that the accused had fled the scene, Maznan, 66, lodged a police report.

Mea’ah was admitted to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here, where she received three stitches for injuries on the right side of her head.

Rafi was arrested later that day.

He was taken to court yesterday to face a charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine, and whipping, upon conviction.

Siti Aminah ordered Rafi to serve the jail term from the date of his arrest.

After the proceeding, Rafi was seen crying and begging a court official to allow him to meet his mother and seek her forgiveness.

The official calmed him down, telling him that he could try to communicate with Mea’ah while serving his jail term.

Deputy public prosecutor Haryati Abdullah prosecuted, while the accused was unrepresented.
