Geng Tebuk members killed in shoot-out

-

MELAKA: Two men, believed to be members of a gang known as Geng Tebuk, were shot dead by police at a supermarket in Sungai Udang here early yesterday as they attempted to break into a goldsmith shop.

In the 4.30am incident, the two suspects, both believed to be foreigners in their 30s, were reported to have fired two shots at the police, before one of them attacked the policemen with a parang.

Melaka police chief Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan said the Criminal Investigation Department despatched a team to the scene after being alerted to a vehicle parked outside the supermarket in Sungai Udang.

“The team found three suspects trying to break into the goldsmith shop in the supermarket. The suspects tried to flee as soon as police identified themselves. One of them fired two shots at the police, while another suspect swung a parang to evade arrest,” said Jalil at the state police headquarters in Bukit Beruang.

He said following an exchange of fire, two suspects were killed while a third fled.

Police have launched a manhunt for the third suspect, who is believed to be in Sungai Udang.

Jalil said the three suspects were believed to have been involved in at least 14 jewellery store and goldsmith shop breakins in Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Melaka, the Klang Valley and Terengganu.

“Police believe the same suspects are involved in other breakins through their modus operandi, which is drilling holes into the walls to enter the premises, usually between 11pm and 7am, when the premises are closed,” said Jalil.

“The suspects also dress similarly during their break-ins — in short-sleeved white shirt, shorts, sports shoes, ski masks and carrying backpacks.”

He added that the car used by the suspects was believed to have been stolen in Johor Jaya in 2016.

“We believe 14 cases, with estimated losses of RM1 million, have been solved.”
