ODD-JOB worker Saharidan Mat Jam could not contain his joy when he collected a Tabung Bencana (Disaster Relief Fund) NSTP-Media Prima cash voucher at the District and Land Office here yesterday.

The father of six said he would be able to buy school items, such as uniforms, shoes and stationery, for his children. The old ones were ruined in floods earlier this month.

Saharidan, 39, said since his home in Kampung

Simpang Sepayang and car were damaged by floodwaters, he had to postpone buying the school items.

“The floods struck a day before the school term began on Jan 2, and my children had no time to salvage their belongings.

“They were prepared for school, but the floods damaged the items.

“The floodwaters rose quickly, so we had to vacate the house.

“Since they decided to use their old school uniforms, they have been pestering me to buy new stationery. Today, thanks to the cash aid, I can finally buy them the items.”

Saharidan, who was among 185 families in the district to receive a RM200 voucher, said he was grateful that people continued to help flood victims, even after the disaster had ended.

Sharina Jantan from the Batu 8 Orang Asli settlement here thanked the Media Prima-NSTP Volunteer Brigade for the aid, saying that it would ease her financial burden.

Sharina, 40, said she would use the voucher to buy groceries for her family of seven.

“The flood victims in Rompin thank NSTP-Media Prima for the contribution.”

New Straits Times Press (NSTP) corporate communications head Wan Abdillah Wan Nawi said the programme was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiative to ease the burden of flood victims.

“Last year, we helped flood victims in Kelantan, Penang and Terengganu. This year, Pahang is our first destination. We provided cash vouchers so victims can decide how to spend the money.”

Ninety-one families affected by floods in Endau, Johor, also received similar aid yesterday.
