The travellers
The play aims to reinforce the message that our existence on Earth is only temporary, writes Dennis Chua
THE Adni Islamic School presents its Annual Theatre Performance 2018 titled The Travellers tomorrow and on Sunday. The spiritual play conveys the timeless message that humans are travellers in this world, which is just a temporary stop before their journey towards eternal life.
It gives audiences a glimpse of humankind’s journey as God’s servants and vice regents.
Through the eyes of a small boy named Hafiz, it follows the journey of creation, the growth of human civilisation and, finally, its decline.
Little Hafiz has been devoted to the word of God since birth and later becomes a teacher and a famous scholar but soon loses his way and goes against all that he has grown up by. After a tragedy befalls him, Hafiz returns to the right path and rebuilds his life from scratch.
The Travellers is a multi-disciplinary performance which involves narration, choral speaking, poetry and nasyid (spiritual music).
It comprises three acts and the significance of having one character with a familiar development arc, to remind audiences that everybody makes mistakes, and forgiveness and redemption are always available from the Almighty.
The play features many different, welldeveloped characters who guide Hafiz on his life and spiritual journey. All reflect good human qualities which we often overlook and the programme offers pointers on staying on the straight path till the very end.
All of the 20-odd stage performers are students of the school, and they are amply complemented by audio visual aids, special effects and well-designed lighting.
The Travellers, an original play conceptualised by the late Zaiton Malek with a script written by Nour Amir will be staged at Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka in Jalan Dewan Bahasa, Kuala Lumpur at 8.30pm and 3pm (Sunday).
Tickets are RM25, RM40 and RM50. Call 03-4252 5810 or 010-401 5810.
