Dr M trying to convince EU envoys, says Salleh
KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s meeting with a group of European Union ambassadors has been described as an attempt to convince the latter that his opposition front was genuine.
Umno treasurer Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak, in saying this, believed that the EU had more important issues to look into, such as matters concerning refugees.
Salleh who is also the communications and multimedia minister, said history was being repeated as a similar meeting had taken place when the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman was prime minister.
“In fact, the EU Parliament even issued a statement criticising the jailing of (former deputy prime minister) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and alleged that Malaysia’s democracy is flawed.
“This is quite normal and the EU always comments on other countries while overlooking affairs in the EU.
“There are about 65 million refugees worldwide who require EU’s attention. Surely, that is more important when thousands are dying every day,” he said.
In a previous report, PPBM supreme council member Datuk A. Kadir Jasin was quoted as saying that the meeting took place at the residence of the Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the EU to Malaysia, Maria Castillo Fernández.
It was also reported that 14 ambassadors and three charges de affaires of EU countries were present to meet several Pakatan Harapan representatives, including coalition secretary-general Saifuddin Ab dullah, DAP chairman Tan Kok Wai and PKR vice-president Dr Xavier Jeyakumar.
