Initiative benefits people, says PM

- » REPORTS BY ABDUL RAZAK RAAF AND NOOR AINUM IBNU HAJAR ABU SEMAN

THE prime minister launches the vastly improved Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia 2.0, which offers brand-name food products at prices lower than elsewhere. The items, whose range will be doubled soon, are also available in partner stores.

MORE than 50 brandname products are available at belowmarket prices at Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia 2.0 (KR1M 2.0) outlets.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the items included sugar at RM2.85 per kg, flour at RM1.30 per kg and Bunga Rayabrand rice pack (10kg) at RM24.90.

He said other items, such as 1kg of Milo and Pampers disposable diapers, were also sold at a lower price.

“This government initiative will lead to significant benefits for the people.

“They can shop at KR1M 2.0 outlets and compare prices of goods sold there with other shops.

“I feel that if we want to save on expenditure, we must become smart and prudent consumers.

“Shops that are partners with KR1M 2.0 are not only a boon to customers, but also to operators as they will receive more business.

“We have decided not to sell non-branded goods because based on feedback, people are more interested in branded items.

“That is why we retained the branded goods but at a lower price compared with the market,” Najib said during the launch of KR1M 2.0 at TMG Mall here yesterday.

He said among the improvements made to the first programme, introduced in 2011, was the availability of KR1M 2.0 goods at partner stores under the Tunas Manja Group.

He said KR1M 2.0 new business model would adopt a more open policy, be competitive and provide opportunities for small retailers.

The event was attended by Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.

More than 6,000 residents flocked to the supermarket to get basic necessities sold at a special price in conjunction with the launch of KR1M 2.0.

Najib said KR1M 2.0 hoped to open 300 outlets in the TMG network chain as well as KK Mart, which became the strategic partners of Perbadanan Nasional Bhd, the main operator of KR1M 2.0, by the end of this year.

“The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry will open 300 of KR1M 2.0 stores by year-end.

“I am confident that with KR1M 2.0’s branded and high-quality goods, the store will become a top choice in urban and rural areas.”
