‘Reject Dr M’s emergency claims’
KOTA BARU: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has tarnished Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Barisan Nasional by claiming that they will declare an emergency to prevent the general election from being held.
Kelantan Umno liaison chief Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the move by the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chairman, calling the people to take to the streets over the matter, also showed that Dr Mahathir continued to make U-turns.
He said Dr Mahathir’s accusation was baseless as the country had laws and police, as well as election regulations under the Election Commission.
“When he was prime minister, Dr Mahathir rejected street demonstrations, but now he is encouraging people to protest against the government.
“His baseless remarks should be rejected by the people, as street demonstrations are not the best channel to resolve problems.”
Mustapa was speaking after witnessing a memorandum of understanding between Ain-Medicare and A-BIO here yesterday.
He was commenting on Dr Mahathir’s remarks in calling for the people to take to the streets if an emergency was declared to prevent the election from being held.
Mustapa said taking to the streets was not the Malaysian way to resolve problems.
Instead, he said, problems should be tackled through musyawarah (discussion) and muafakat (cooperation).
“People must go through proper channels to voice their opinions without having to resort to demonstrations.
“I am confident that people are more mature and will reject Dr Mahathir’s statement.”
