-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Securities Commission (SC) will be hosting the two-day World Capital Markets Symposium 2018 (WCMS 2018) starting tomorrow.

Themed “Renaissance of Capitalism: Markets for Growth”, the symposium, which is in its fifth edition, will bring together global thought leaders, industry experts, prominent policy and decision makers to deliberate on the future of finance.

With a key emphasis on sustainability, the symposium will examine development challenges and socio-economic issues, the need for the re-orientation of financial markets and how innovation and technology can be leveraged to drive sustainable and inclusive growth.

Among the highlights of the symposium will be discussions on the market outlook this year, digital revolution, gender diversity, investment values, future of finance and the future of capitalism, as well as a session with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Asia’s positioning in the global dynamics.

The symposium will feature some 40 speakers, including former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark, former Greece finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, International Valuation Standards Council chairman Sir David Tweedie and United Nations Global Impact founding executive director George Kell, as well as a special message by the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles.

The first session — “Moving the Needle” with Clark — will discuss the global sustainability agenda and how it impacts the planet, people and prosperity.

Clark will share her thoughts on how economies across the world are addressing this and whether growth is being pursued at the expense of sustainability.

Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank president and chairman Jin Liqun will also share his views on how Asia’s financing needs will be met and the implications of China’s Belt and Road initiative on the future and long-term growth in the region in his special address on the first day.

The conference’s second day will be led by a session with Varoufakis, who will share his views on the future of capitalism and how resources should be channelled towards productive activities and improving societal well-being.

He will speak about developments in Europe and how economies are navigating the Brexit course.
