Excellence in medical education

-

MELAKA-Manipal Medical College (MMMC) was established in 1997 and last year, it celebrated two decades of a highly successful run as a medical school in Malaysia.

It is widely recognised as one of the best medical schools in Malaysia and is a source of highly proficient medical professionals to the Malaysian health system.

MMMC’s reputation stems from its determination of providing excellent services, including incomparable academic delivery. Its showcase of awards and accolades reflects its commitment in excellence to medical education.

It’s degrees in medicine and dental surgery are twin-campus programmes, whereby students complete 24 to 36 months of the basic sciences (pre-clinicals) in the MMMC campus in Manipal, India, and then return to Malaysia for the clinical training in Malaysian general hospitals.

Manipal, considered by many as among the top 5 medical universities in India, has one of the largest Anatomy and Pathology museums in Asia with more than 1,000 dissected specimens on display.

MMMC students count themselves lucky to have access to this and many excellent resources in a university environment.

These resources are not limited to academia only, and students have a wonderful experience in a vibrant setting, that often have them musing nostalgically when they return to Malaysia.

To complement the success of the medical programme, the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) was introduced in 2009 and if the numbers clamouring for this programme is any indication, it seems that BDS is another winner.

Aspiring dental surgeons are urged to sign up for MMMC’s Foundation in Science (FIS) programme to stand a chance to enter the popular BDS course.

MMMC’s FIS is a one-year preuniversity course completed in the Malacca campus.

A unique programme, FIS is designed to prepare students for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), and BDS undergraduate degrees, with the inclusion of subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, Pharmacology, and Oral Biology.

This provides a better insight into these subjects and prepares students for the undergraduate studies. Despite the rigours and intensity of the course, it is promising to note that FIS has a remarkable success rate of 95 per cent and above.

Students in MBBS and BDS who have been through FIS have given positive feedback about the solid groundwork obtained. FIS students are given top priority into MMMC’s MBBS and BDS programmes.

For students and parents who are hesitant to enrol in MMMC due to financial constraints, MMMC offers up to 100 per cent scholarships for students for FIS, and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation now offers full complement of the RM150,000 disbursement for MBBS.

With a hallmark of academic excellence and an enviable record in providing quality medical and dental education, MMMC is committed to providing a curriculum that offers diverse learning opportunities.

The commitment to excellence is one that is “Inspired by Life” and tempered by ethical service to the nation and humanity.

Online applications can now be submitted for this year’s intake via www.manipal.edu/melaka.

Or better still, drive to the campus in Malacca and be convinced of Melaka-Manipal’s commitment to quality education.
