Foundation students beef up speaking skills

-

THE Public Speaking Club of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Dengkil, Selangor, organised an event aimed at creating awareness of the importance of public speaking skills among students on campus.

Students from the Law, Science, TESL and Engineering foundation programmes came together at a communications workshop to learn how to be more confident when speaking in front of a crowd, enhance presentation skills and discover skills needed for interacting with others.

Consisting of two slots — “NLP?” and “Guide Me Please” — the one-night programme was led by Neuro Linguistic Programme (NLP) master practitioner Mohd Syafiq Zainal, better known as Coach Syafiq Zainal.

Apart from building personal development for organisation success, NLP is also a practice of understanding how people organise their thinking, feelings, language and behaviour to interact with others.

The module used in the programme for the students comprised a methodology that encouraged individuals to achieve outstanding performance on a daily basis or special occasions.

The volunteer-facilitators for the programme are Masters and degree students, who are also NLP senior learners. The best part of the second slot was that the most proactive participants in each group were given prizes from the Public Speaking Club members.

“The NLP programme was amazing. It brings awesome output from all of us here at Dengkil. We learnt new skills, and the way to communicate and interact with people. This will help us in many ways. From here on, the students will be competitive and outgoing not only locally, but globally,” said Nur Fathin Farina Mokhtar, a Foundation in Law student who is president of the Public Speaking Club.

She said the club was appreciative towards the cooperation given by the NLP organisation, which is under Yayasan Dana Kebajikan Muslim Malaysia.
