Anifah: Malaysia plays vital role in UN to boost cooperation
PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia believes the United Nations (UN) plays an imperative role as a platform for international cooperation based on the principles of mutual respect and international law.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman said since joining the UN in September 1957, Malaysia had promoted the three founding pillars of the UN system.
The pillars were peace and security, human rights and development, he said.
“These included Malaysia playing its role effectively and efficiently to prevent conflicts and to sustain peace during our nonpermanent membership in the UN Security Council on four occasions: 1965, 1989 to 1990, 1999 to 2000 and 2015 to 2016.
“As well as its role in UN peacekeeping missions since 1960 where Malaysia has participated in 36 peacekeeping missions with over 35,000 Malaysian military and police personnel deployed,” he said during his opening remarks at the launch of the new UN offices here yesterday.
Anifah said Malaysia remained committed to working and collaborating with UN to ensure development and progress in all fronts and spheres by taking national interest into account.
On the event, he said UN offices’ relocation to Putrajaya was timely as UN had established its service centres in Cyberjaya, UN Youth Delegate Programme (UNDP) Global Shared Services Centre that serves 166 UNDP offices.
Present were UN Assistant Secretary-General and UNDP assistant administrator and regional director for Asia and Pacific, Haoliang Xu, and UN resident coordinator in Malaysia, Stefan Priesner.
