Limit it to 2 terms, says Teh

- By Siti Sofia Md Nasir

GEORGE TOWN: DAP Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu has again demanded that the tenure of Penang chief minister be limited to just two terms.

He said this was considered the best time to limit the term for the post as Pakatan Harapan had wanted to impose a two-term limit for the prime minister’s post in its manifesto.

“The opposition should prove it first, if it wants to put it in its manifesto.

“Moreover, PH is in charge of Selangor and Penang. Hence, it should prove to the people now.

“If it does not do it now, then its manifesto is just an empty promise to the people.

“People are wise to judge for themselves,” he told a press conference here yesterday.

Asked if he was afraid of action taken by DAP over his remarks, Teh said the party had punished him by electing an unofficial “new Tanjung Bungah assemblyman”.

He said the state government had elected Bukit Bendera member of parliament Zairil Khir Johari to oversee his duties as the constituency’s assemblyman, apart from terminating the contract of his assistants months ago.

“The state government terminated the contract of my assistants, which should have expired at the end of June.

“Even Zairil has opened a Tanjung Bungah service centre here a few days ago to take over my duties.

“I no longer have any fear of any punishment from DAP as it has already done it,” he said.

Since the 2014 state legislative assembly sitting, Teh had proposed that the post of chief minister be rotated and its tenure limited to two terms to make way for other capable leaders to lead.

His efforts proved futile when his motion was rejected by other assemblymen. On March 31, 2016, Teh again tabled the same motion, but was again rejected.
