MCKK ready for strong run

- Fadhli Ishak

Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) are set to launch a strong assault on the MCKK Premier Sevens title when the prestigious school rugby tournament returns to the royal town for its eighth edition on Feb 23-25.

Having started preparation for the competition at the end of last year, MCKK tournament director Amrul Hazarin said team spirit is running high in Kuala Kangsar.

“The majority of the teams competing are very strong as they are either champions or runners-up in their respective state (level tournament),” said Amrul.

“It will be a finely balanced competition which I am sure all the teams want to win. It is no different with us.

“As in previous years, we have already begun early preparation at the end of last year. Team spirit is running high and we will do our best to bring the NJ Ryan Trophy home to Kuala Kangsar.”

MCKK will, however, have to be at their best to wrest the trophy from four-time winners Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) who will be back to defend their title this year. MCKK’s only win in the tournament came in 2013.

The Premier Sevens, which enjoys strong support from Unifi as title sponsor of the competition, will also feature Singapore-based Australian International School.

In a report published in the New Straits Times yesterday, Royal Military College was inadvertently spelt as Royal Malay College. The error is regretted.
