Segovia on the double as Selangor trounce Melaka

- Singh Devinder

Segovia scored twice for a second consecutive Super League match to fire Selangor to a 4-1 win over Melaka in Cheras yesterday.

The Spanish striker, who also netted two goals in Selangor’s opening 2-0 win over Kuala Lumpur, could have had a hattrick had Melaka goalkeeper Zamir Selamat not saved his penalty kick just before half-time.

Syahmi Safari also bagged a brace for Selangor, who regained top spot in the standings from four-time champions Johor Darul Ta’zim on goal difference, after Melaka had drawn level through Thiago Gomes.

Perak stunned 10-man Kedah 3-1 in Alor Star to move up to third on four points, ahead of PKNS on goal difference after Safee Sali scored a spectacular header in a 1-0 win over Pahang in Shah Alam.

Negri Sembilan claimed their first win of the season by beating Kuala Lumpur 2-0 in Paroi thanks to Nicolas Velez’s two first-half strikes.

Segovia continued where he left off on Sunday when he scored after just seven minutes before Melaka’s Gomes curled in a fine free-kick to beat Norazlan Razali at the near post in on the halfhour.

Having saved Segovia’s 44thminute penalty, Melaka goalkeeper Zamir Selamat made a mess of things in gifting Syahmi a goal in the 55th before Segovia went top of the goal scoring charts past Terengganu’s Kipre Tchetche with his fourth of the season 13 minutes later.

With Selangor assured of victory, Syahmi wrapped up proceedings in the 90th minute to preserve Selangor’s 100 per cent record at their new Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium home.

The Darulaman Stadium crowd witnessed an action packed final 15 minutes which included three goals and a red card as Kedah suffered their second consecutive defeat.

Afrer Gilmar Jose Da Silva Filho fired Perak ahead in the 21st minute, Sandro Mendonca equalised for Kedah from the penalty spot in the 79th minute.

Kedah midfielder Liridon Krasniqi was given his marching orders three minutes later for slapping the back of the Leandro Dos Santos’ head before Nazrin Nawi floated in a free-kick in the 87th minute which eluded everyone in the box, although Robert Cornthwaite also claimed the goal, to put Perak in front again.

Nazirul Naim Che Hashim was on the end of a three-on-one counter attack to sweep the ball in for 3-1 deep into stoppage-time.

PKNS left it late to snatch three points in Shah Alam when Safee rose to head in the winner after seeing his initial flying header turned on to the crossbar by Pahang goalkeeper Helmi Eliza Elias and rebound to him.
