‘Female disciplinary teachers are as capable’

-

PADANG TERAP: The low number of male disciplinary teachers does not pose a problem as female teachers can hold the position.

Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the ministry was confident of its disciplinary teachers, be it male or female, as those who filled the position possessed the right qualities.

He said the low number of male disciplinary teachers could be due to the higher number of female enrolment at teachers’ training colleges and local universities.

“However, whether it is male or female, I believe they can handle the responsibility entrusted to them.

“Of course, the challenges faced by female disciplinary teachers, especially at high-risk schools, are more challenging, but I trust that these schools are working with the authorities to tackle disciplinary problems,” said Mahdzir yesterday.

He was commenting on a claim that the low number of male disciplinary teachers contributed to disciplinary problems in schools in rural areas.

Mahdzir said for high-risk schools, a good working relationship between the school management and the authorities was important to curb disciplinary problems.

“The cooperation between the parent-teacher associations, police, the National AntiDrug Agency, local leaders and the community is vital to solve disciplinary issues.”
