Najib’s former private secretary dies

KUANTAN: Paya Besar member of parliament Datuk Seri Abdul Manan Ismail, 69, died in Taman Melawati in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

His brother, Datuk Seri Muhammad Safian Ismail, said Manan was believed to have suffered a heart attack before collapsing at the bathroom. Safian, who is also Pahang state secretary, said Manan died at 6.45pm.

The late Paya Besar Umno division chairman defeated PKR candidate Murnie Hidayah Anuar and independen­t candidate Zahari Mamat with a majority of 7,715 votes in the last election.

Manan, who has been Paya Besar MP since 2008, once served as the private secretary to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak between 1986 and 2004. He was also the Malaysian Intellect Property Corporatio­n chairman.

In Kuala Lumpur, Najib and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, paid their last respects to Manan at his residence.

Present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan and Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Harun

In a Twitter posting, Najib conveyed his condolence­s to Manan’s family.

“Innalillah. Saddened by the news that the Paya Besar MP and my former private secretary Datuk Seri Abdul Manan Ismail had passed away.

“It is a big loss to Umno. Condolence­s to the family. May his soul be blessed. Al-Fatihah,” he tweeted.

“We were so close before and had also worked together at the Youth and Sports Ministry.”
