SESB sets up technical training centre in Sabah

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has set up a technical training centre in Kota Belud, Sabah, to beef up its staff competency, via its subsidiary Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB).

TNB chairman Tan Sri Leo Moggie said the centre would be beneficial to SESB contractors and the public. The training centre will be the first in Sabah to offer a cable joiner course.

The course has been accredited by the Energy Commission and will offer training in the field of electric cables up to 33kV.

Leo Moggie said the training centre would also involve another TNB subsidiary, TNB Integrate d Learning Solution Sdn Bhd (ILSAS).

“The establishment of the centre is in line with TNB’s aspiration to develop human capital-related technical training and specialised services performed by ILSAS.”

“Since 1978, ILSAS has been developing talents for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Through ILSAS, TNB spends RM90 million a year for the development of human capital,” he said.

TNB’s involvement in developing human capital includes Universiti Tenaga Nasional (Uniten) and Yayasan Tenaga Nasional.

Of the 27, 729 graduates from Uniten since its inception in 1997, 12,505 graduates, or 45 per cent, were engineering graduates. Last year, Uniten was ranked in the top two per cent of 26,000 universities globally, based on the QS World University Rankings in engineering and technology.

“The foundation has offered 11,000 scholarships and loans since 1993,” said Moggie.

Last year, YTN spent RM55.78 million to sponsor excellent Malaysian students to purse their studies in local and overseas universities.
