of the applicants do not earn more than RM42,000 annually; applicants must have at least three As in their SPM results; and are accepted to a local college or university.

BBGS Alumni is ambitiously targeting to raise RM1.25 million from its 125th anniversary activities. It also welcomes donations from individuals and corporations that believe in the changing power of education.

Moey added: “BBGS pioneered women’s education and nurtured generations of girls from families rich and poor in the tradition of excellence, discipline and godliness. The school’s selfless pioneers had the vision of educating women in this country, to raise their status in the eyes of society, in order that they may live fuller lives, having earned a worthier place in the world.

“Today, the BBGS alumnae are continuing this spirit of giving and excellence even though the original school building may no longer be there. Just as the school’s founding teachers gave young girls the opportunity to learn and excel, we are giving young Malaysians the same opportunity.”

Over its 125-year history, BBGS has produced great Malaysian women, each pursuing different life paths — title holders, a Pulitzer prizewinner, award winners, leaders of industries, heads of companies, actresses, singers, wonderful teachers, dedicated mothers and women of substance.

Formerly known as the Chinese Girls’ School, BBGS gained its name after moving to its premises on Jalan Bukit Bintang in 1930. In 2000, the school was closed and the BBGS landmark was demolished to make way for Pavilion KL, a commercial site in Kuala Lumpur.
