‘Govt will fulfil Indian community’s requests’

LANGKAWI: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak assured the Indian community here that the Kedah Barisan Nasional will fulfil the community’s requests.

He said although the matter was under the jurisdicti­on of the state government, he had discussed the requests with Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah.

“I have discussed the matter with the menteri besar (Ahmad Bashah). He has given his assurance and support to the requests of the Indian community in Langkawi,” he said at a teh tarik session with the Indian community at the Langkawi MIC Hall here on Friday.

He said the requests from the community included the need to gazette land for a temple, a request for land for another temple and land to resettle the community here.

Najib assured the Indian community that their requests on the three matters would be resolved.

The Indian community here is seeking to gazette an existing land at Taman Sungai Raya for Sri Mahamariam­man Temple and is requesting land for Sri Subramania­r Temple.

They are also seeking the government’s assistance to allocate a 11.34ha plot of land for the resettleme­nt of the community.

In his speech earlier, Langkawi MIC division chief V. Nagaiah conveyed the Indian community’s requests.

Some 1,000 Indians attended the event, which saw the presence of Bashah, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, Langkawi member of parliament Datuk Nawawi Ahmad and Kedah MIC chairman Senator Datuk Jaspal Singh.
