TANJUNG KARANG: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi joined a convoy of 70 policemen on superbikes yesterday to raise funds for Tabung Amanah Warisan Polis.

The programme, held in conjunction with the 211th Police Day, raised RM134,000 to aid retired policemen and their families, as well as strengthen the relationship between police and the community.

Zahid, an avid superbiker, took part in the first leg of the convoy, travelling from here to Hutan Melintang in Perak.

Flagged off by Selangor police chief Datuk Mazlan Mansor, the convoy was jointly led by Zahid and federal police Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah.

Mazlan said the convoy would pass through four states — Selangor, Perak, Pahang and Negri Sembilan — in the three-day programme.

“Retired policemen are an asset to the country and people, because they have vast knowledge on safety and expertise in combating crime.

“I would like to thank Zahid for going down to the ground and participating in this programme.

“His presence here today (yesterday) shows that the government is, and will always, be considerate to the people,” said Mazlan.

Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Tan Sri Noh Omar expressed gratitude to the police for launching the programme here.

“We have always valued the police (for their services) to the public), and have allocated RM1.6 million to upgrade and maintain the Tanjung Karang police quarters.”
