4 killed in 3-vehicle collision in Grik

GRIK: Four people were killed and six injured — two seriously — in a three-vehicle collision at Km45.4 of the East-West Expressway between here and Jeli yesterday.

Initial reports indicate that two victims were killed at the scene, while two others were pronounced dead at Gerik Hospital.

The 12.45pm accident, which occurred near the Tasik Banding Fisheries Department here, involved an Audi, a four-wheeldrive (4WD) vehicle and a Perodua Kenari.

“We received a distress call at 12.56pm. Upon arrival, we discovered that two of the victims were (already dead),” said district Fire and Rescue Department chief Azizul Aswad Asaris.

He said two of those killed were in the Audi and the others were in the 4WD vehicle.

He said it was believed that those in the pick-up truck and the Perodua Kenari were heading for Jeli, while the other vehicle was coming from the opposite direction.

District police chief Superintendent Ismail Mat Isa said two of those killed were the driver of the 4WD, Rosli Zakaria, 54, of Kampung Changgai in Pasir Putih, and his disabled son, Mohamad Syafiq, 23.

The other two were passengers in the Audi — Che Wan Teh Abdul Aziz, 54, and Khairul Khawrizmie Azizan, 17.

“We believe that the Audi had scraped against the Perodua Kenari, causing the smaller vehicle to crash into the right side of the road.

“The Audi ended up in the opposite lane where it rammed into the 4WD.”

Ismail said the other two who were seriously injured were passenger in the 4WD, Che Yam @ Mariam Che Awang, 45, and the driver of the Audi, Azizan Desa, 60.

Both were taken to Taiping Hospital.

Others injured were the 25year-old driver of the Perodua Kenari and two of her passengers, aged 22 and 19, as well as a 14-year-old teen who was a passenger in the Audi.
