Commendable show from Jeffrey
alpine ski racer Jeffrey Webb did well to finish midpack in the men’s giant slalom on his Winter Olympics debut in Pyeongchang yesterday.
Jeffrey clocked one minute and 25.73 seconds in the first run followed by 1:22.95s in the second for a combined time of 2:48.68s at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre.
He finished 68th out of 110 skiers that started in the competition.
Chef-de-mission Datuk Paduka Mumtaz Jaafar praised the 19year-old for his decent performance.
“I think he did very well considering that it was his first experience representing Malaysia at the Winter Olympics,” said Mumtaz.
“He was against top skiers and some even failed to finish.
“Jeffrey was focused and he was careful throughout the race as he completed the event successfully.”
His mother Jasmin Webb said it was a proud moment for the family.
“I am proud of Jeffrey and also happy that he has gained experience from racing against the best ski racers in the world.”
Austrian Marcel Hirscher emerged victorious on 2:18.04s while Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen (+1.27s) and France’s Alexis Pinturault (+1.31s) settled for silver and bronze, respectively.
Jeffrey still has the slalom event to compete in on Thursday.
