Senior riders fail to shine in Nilai

-

national senior riders endured a quiet outing in the Asian Track Championships with no medals to show at the National Velodrome in Nilai yesterday.

Mohd Fadhil Zonis finished fourth in the men’s 1km time trial event in one minute and 2.507 seconds.

Fadhil, who had been hoping to build on his Kuala Lumpur Sea Games win in the same event, was marginally faster during qualifying (1:02.273s) earlier in the day.

Fatehah Mustapa, who took bronze in the 500m time trial yesterday, saw her campaign in the individual sprint come to an early end after losing to China’s Guo Yufang (11.582s) in the opening round.

Fatehah had earlier clocked 11.149s for eighth position in the qualifying round.

The Terengganu-born rider admitted that she made a mistake against Yufang.

“I got caught out a little as I did not notice she (Yufang) had passed below me. It was already too late to catch up as she had opened up a gap,” said the 28year-old. “However, I am still happy with my time in qualifying. It shows I am in a good place at the moment.

“Well there is still the keirin (tomorrow) left and hopefully I will be able to get another medal in that.”

Nur Aiman Rosli came in sixth overall in the men’s omnium after scoring a combined 114 points from the four disciplines.

In the juniors, Amar Danial Masri clocked 1:03.735s to clinch silver and notch a new national junior record in the 1km time trial. The previous national junior record of 1:03.962s was set by Firdaus Zonis at the 2014 edition.

Thailand’s W. Saenkhamwong took gold in 1:03:397s while Viktor Golov (1:03:873s) of Kazakhstan completed the podium.

Azizulhasni Awang, who settled for bronze in the keirin on Saturday, will look to defend his gold in the men’s individual sprint event today
