It is not bound by its leaders’ pledges, says opposition pact chairman

PAKATAN Harapan is not bound by the promises made by its leaders to the people in the run-up to GE14. Chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad says the pact will re-evaluate at least 60 campaign pledges based on its financial capacity.

TUN Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday admitted that Pakatan Harapan would not be able to fulfil all the election promises its leaders had made.

What’s more, the Pakatan Harapan chairman said the opposition pact was “not bound” by the statements made by its leaders in terms of pledges to the rakyat.

Dr Mahathir said the Pakatan Harapan leadership would reevaluate all 60 pledges made in the past in its manifesto to see if these election promises were within its financial capacity.

“We are aware that before we completed the manifesto, a lot of Pakatan Harapan leaders had made certain statements (in regard to pledges made to the rakyat).

“We are not tied to the statements which were made, if it was found that they could not be implemented when we take over the government,” he said after chairing the opposition pact’s presidential council meeting, at Menara Yayasan Selangor.

Present was PKR president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

Touching on the opposition pact’s state seat allocation, which has dragged on for sometime now, Dr Mahathir acknowledged that seven states had yet to resolve the matter.

He said thus far, only four states had resolved their seat allocation in Peninsular Malaysia.

“We had resolved the seats involving Parliament (seats). We still have disagreement with other parties in regard to state seats (in the seven states).

“They are not seeing eye to eye in regard to the seat allocation,” he said, declining to reveal the seven states involved.

Dr Mahathir said these states had been given until Friday to resolve the issue, failing which the matter would be brought to the presidential council.

As to where he would be contesting, Dr Mahathir continued to keep everyone guessing, teasing that he “would appear in a lot of places, including Putrajaya”.

“I will even go to Pekan to see its people. Alor Star is also a pekan,” he said in jest.

It was previously speculated that he was considering contesting in Langkawi and even Putrajaya.

On the Federal Court’s ruling that the Election Commission’s redelineation proposal is not amenable through a judicial review, Dr Mahathir said he expected other organisations to protest the matter due to its misgivings. He said Pakatan Harapan would continue to protest the decision.

The apex court ruled to quash the applications of two members of parliament from Perak and seven voters from Malacca to appeal a Court of Appeal’s decision on the proposal that was not favourable to them.

On another matter, Dr Mahathir said Pakatan Harapan planned to file legal papers against the Registry of Societies (RoS) by tomorrow for remaining silent on its registration.

“We have not received any response from RoS and even though we asked them about the status of the registration, they have not answered.

“So, we cannot say they have rejected (our applications) because they have not done so.

“On the other hand, we can’t say anything because we still do not have proof,” he said.

Dr Mahathir said legal proceedings would be initiated to get RoS to reply to the party’s many requests and queries on the pact’s application.
