Delight in German symphonic masterpieces

- Dchua@nst.com.my

THE Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra will astound with a programme of grand German masterpieces at 8.30pm tomorrow and 3pm on Sunday at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, KLCC, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.

Russian maestro Stanislav Kochanovsky returns to the DFP after weaving magic with the MPO in 2016. He collaborates frequently with the Moscow and St. Petersburg Philharmonics, and Mariinsky Symphony.

In addition to his career in Russia, Kochanovsky’s international presence is also growing rapidly to include debut performances with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, NHK Symphony and orchestras in Italy and Australia. His musical activity already includes over 50 symphonic programmes, five festivals and seven opera productions.

The programme for these concerts will begin with Wagner’s Prelude to the warmhearted and comic opera Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, written in 1862. It acts as a musical condensation of the entire opera with a sturdy theme of the Mastersingers as a corporate entity.

The opera was premiered in Munich in 1868 and draws inspiration on the historical figure of Hans Sachs and the German Mastersingers. After an interval, the MPO will return to present Mahler’s Symphony No.7.

For music lovers and Mahler aficionados, the Seventh Symphony is the last of this composer’s 10 symphonies to engage their interest and appreciation. Premiered in Prague in 1908, this work is no less fascinating, thrilling and sublime a symphony than any other by Mahler. Tickets: RM60 to RM150.
