Down to Soniia or Jin Wei for sole singles spot

- Fabian Peter

pressure is on for the national players as the National Championships will serve as a decider before the BA of Malaysia (BAM) finalise their men and women’s squads for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April.

The national meet starts today at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara.

It is understood that BAM have decided on players for each event for the Commonwealth Games except for the women’s singles.

The fight for the sole women’s singles spot is between national No 1 Soniia Cheah and 2015 world junior champion Goh Jin Wei.

Soniia, is the top seed at the national meet, while Jin Wei is seeded second.

Soniia admitted that she is racing against time to regain her form, but would do her best to impress coach Tey Seu Bock.

“My form has been inconsistent since the recent Asia Team Championships in Alor Star.

“I hope I can play well in this tournament and earn the women’s singles ticket to the Gold Coast,” said Soniia, who opens her campaign against qualifier R. Shalini.

Jin Wei who has not been at her best since winning the women’s singles gold medal at the Kuala Lumpur Sea Games last year, plays Samin Arena Satu.

Those confirmed for the Commonwealth Games are Chow Mei Kuan, Vivian Hoo, Shevon Lai and Goh Liu Ying.
