ECO World Foundation yesterday contributed 250 sets of desks and chairs worth RM27,000 to three schools in Selangor and Perak.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, said the foundation believed education was an investment for the country’s future.

“A good education has the power to change someone’s life for the better, which is the reason we focus on providing educational assistance to schools that need our help.”

Lee said the schools — SJK(C) Chung Wah in Jeram, Selangor, SJK(C) Tiong Hua Kok Bin in Klang, Selangor, and SJK(C) Yeong Seng in Hutan Melintang, Perak — had requested for assistance from the foundation in September.

SJK(C) Chung Wah received 100 sets of furniture, SJK(C) Tiong Hua Kok Bin 100 sets and SJK(C) Yeong Seng 50 sets.

He said since its inception, the foundation had donated 3,380 sets of desks and chairs to schools.

“We have spent RM534,000 replacing schools’ furniture and providing facilities in schools.”

He said the foundation’s main programme was the Student Aid Programme (SAP), which provided financial aid to underprivileged students with the objective of keeping them in school.

“The foundation is helping 3,100 primary and secondary school students from Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Pahang, Johor, and Sabah. With a budget of RM5 million per year, SAP aims to equip students for the new school year, including arranging for their meals and paying their school and tuition fees.”

SJK(C) Chung Wah headmaster Tee Swee Teck said the furniture would provide a conducive learning atmosphere for pupils.

“We replaced faulty desks and chairs with new ones.

“My pupils are motivated to come to school since this year,” said Tee.

SJK(C) Yeong Seng headmistress Low Kan Fah said her school had not received any contribution to replace the furniture in the past 10 years.

“Although we received 50 sets of tables and chairs, we are grateful. The old furniture was not safe to be used by the pupils.”
