Learn worldclass VFX at The One

-

WHEN you watch movies, do you ever wonder how the production crew pull off what is seemingly an impossible act in a particular scene involving, for example, a mermaid or a talking fish? These are usually products of visual effects (VFX).

VFX, however, should not be confused with SFX (special effects) that are live-action illusions made during production to create practical effects. VFX are added digitally in post-production to, for instance, create entirely new backgrounds, add characters or creatures, remove or add objects and fix production issues.

Recognising the demand for a world-class VFX education, The One Academy, one of Malaysia's best art and design colleges, is now partnering up with John Hughes Institute (JHI, previously known as award-winning Rhythm & Hues) to provide a comprehensive syllabus for the Diploma in Film Visual Effects that will train young VFX artists on par with global standards.

This Academy Award-winning VFX company, which expanded to Cyberjaya in 2013, procured Malaysian talents to work on popular box office hits like ‘X-Men: First Class’ (2011) and ‘Life of Pi’ (2012) among many other films. With vast experience in the actual production of award-winning animated movies, JHI has engineered a course that provides intensive training to students to master vital areas in visual effects by creating an environment in which students are able to produce projects in actual practice and comply with current industry standards.

Working hand in hand with industry mentors, the three-year course teaches students to create organic modelling for live action feature films, conduct creative animation, simulate fur or hair, execute rigging for humans, creatures and animals, learn lighting principles and techniques of digital set lighting, implement compositing for production which leads to a final project — a portfolio and more. Students will also learn from experienced professionals with impressive industrious portfolios such as ‘Life of Pi’, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, ‘The Iron Giant’, ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’, ‘Night at the Museum’ and ‘The Golden Compass’.

According to Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the global animation market is worth an estimated US$1 trillion (RM3.9 trillion). With so much potential and profitability, The One Academy is now aiding Malaysia to expand our very own VFX talent pool to supply much-needed skills and talent to the flourishing industry.

Compared to a decade ago, the entertainment sector has seen an exponential rise in terms of movie ticket sales, designating the improvement of the local film industry. In 2016, BoBoiBoy the Movie (RM15.73 million) and Munafik (RM17.04 million) are two locally-produced films with visual effects which dominated the movie market.
