AIMED at developing students’ skills in effective communication, emotional intelligence and critical thinking, the Sunway TES Centre for Accountancy Excellence (CAE) at Sunway College recently hosted the 4th Nurturing Business Champions (NBC) competition.

The bi-annual competition is open to first year students in the Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business (CFAB) programmes. In the recent finals, the top five teams presented their business proposals to a panel of judges comprising representatives from the Big Five accounting firms.

Coming in third were Shahriman Saripudin, Maisara Abu Zaky, Alya Batrisyia Roslee, Angelia Ceasarriee Majakin and Umar Alhafiz Mohd Khalil Alkhushairi of team ‘Kyonity’.

The team developed and presented an advanced calculator ‘Kyocalcs’ which comes with an ink refillable stylus, the ‘Kyopen’. When one uses the ‘Kyopen’ on paper, the hybrid calculator, which is a combination of a basic scientific calculator and a graphing calculator will automatically pick up and transmit the data to the calculator, minimising input error.

Adrian Lim Xin Loong, Eswinder Gill, Tan Uei Lun, Tay Ji Anne and Yap Gin Lim of team ‘Golden Fingers’, came in second, winning themselves RM6,000 cash prize. The team presented refillable spread sticks which comes in various flavours of kaya butter, garlic butter and Nutella.

Adrian shared the team enjoyed and valued the time spent together. He said, “There is definitely more to this competition than meets the eye. It was never just about coming out with a brilliant product and having the perfect business strategy.Sharing his experience of the competition, Adrian recalled one of the challenges they faced was working with members from different personalities and interests.

Team ‘Ambience’ comprised of Angelina Ong Shi Yi, Goh Yong Jin, Jivasuthen Soosaiselvanathan and Teoh Chu Shan emerged champion in the competition. They took home the RM8,000 cash prize with Jivasuthen receiving the Best Speaker award.

Hoping to reduce unnecessary noise in our daily lives which can be disturbing or harmful, the team came up with a minimal, modern and sleek designed noise cancellation device named ‘Ambience’.

According to Angelina, the team experienced a great learning process. “Not only did we learn more about business and finance, we also had the opportunity to apply our knowledge in developing our business proposal.”
