FORMER Singapore international K. Kannan led Eldorado Singapore to the PSC-Ideal International Soccer 7s Grand Masters title, defeating Kedah's Langkawi Veterans 3-0 at the Penang Sports Club ground in George Town recently.

In the Grand Masters final, which attracted a crowd of more than 500 fans and supporters due to the big names in the past,

Penang’s ex-national V. Sagar Babu scored with a header to open accounts for Eldorado midway in the first half.

During the second half, Suwito made it 2-0 and in the final moments, Sagar was on target to score the third goal for the Singapore senior veterans.

In the Veterans category, Pertamina FC Indonesia landed the main title of the championships after numerous failed attempts in the past years.

In the final, Pertamina denied their counterparts and last year's runner-up Bintang Timur FC Indonesia a double when they defeated the later 3-0. Adam Comagola netted a brace while Alexender scored the other goal for Pertamina.

Bintang Timur, who came determined to capture both the titles after finishing as runners-up in the two categories last year, got some consolation after defeating Weston Corp Jurong Singapore 3-0 to lift the Masters title.

Veterans champions Pertamina FC Indonesia and Masters champions Bintang Timur FC Indonesia received RM2,500 each. In the Grand Masters category, Eldorado Singapore and Langkawi Veterans Kedah received RM1,500 and RM1,000 respectively. Organising committee chairman Mohd Azrel Datuk Mohd Junid said the two-day competition was limited to 44 teams due to technical constraints.

He said the new Grand Masters category comprised of a maximum three players between 50 and 55 while the rest was above 55 years and they play 10 minutes each half with a three minutes break in between. Mohd Azrel said the responce for the new category was overwhelming, so they may consider increasing the number of teams, subject to the approval of the committee, as this may lead to reducing teams in other gategories.
