DAP’s ‘rocket’ can’t entice Malay votes, say analysts
KUCHING: DAP is forced to abandon its “rocket” logo for the 14th General Election as it has failed to draw Malay votes, analysts said.
Political analyst Associate Professor Dr Jeniri Amir said Malays remained uncomfortable with DAP as it was seen as a Chinesedominant party.
“It’s a strategic move by the opposition to use PKR’s logo as a common logo to win the hearts and minds of Malay voters.
“Although this might benefit the opposition, it is a risk to DAP as its supporters might find the
PKR logo confusing,” he said.
It was reported recently that DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke had said the opposition had chosen the PKR logo to win Malay votes.
Political observer Datuk Peter Minos said some of the DAP members were unhappy with the a decision but had to comply for the sake of unity in the opposition.
“If the opposition had taken the Registry of Societies’ directives and terms and conditions seriously, it could have used the Pakatan logo.
“But it’s too late to argue about it and DAP was forced to accept the decision,” he said.
Minos said although DAP would continue to use its rocket logo in Sarawak, it showed that the state DAP leaders had caused disunity by not complying with its national leaders’ decision.
“Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen knows that he cannot be too subservient to his (national DAP) bosses as Sarawakians are not keen on parties from the peninsula.
“So, he has claimed that the use of rocket logo in Sarawak is an autonomy granted by the national leaders.
“That’s his motive,” he said.
