Langkawi growing under Najib’s leadership, says Zahid
BERA: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Langkawi residents can distinguish between “glass and gems” in choosing their member of parliament in the 14th General Election.
He said this in response to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s decision to contest the Langkawi parliamentary seat.
Zahid said while he did not deny that the “person” had served in the area, whatever had been done in the past was history.
He said the development agenda had continued under the leadership of the prime minister and Langkawi’s last member of parliament, Datuk Nawawi Ahmad.
“We welcome anyone who wants to contest, but I am confident that Langkawi residents are aware of the government’s efforts and reforms, such as on Pulau Tuba and improvements to the tourism jetties.
“Development under the leadership of the prime minister will continue... but if others are chosen, I fear Langkawi cannot be developed. I am sure the people of Langkawi know which option is the best.”
Zahid said this at the launch of the Bera district police headquarters here yesterday.
Later, he said people in urban and rural areas should be grateful for the development planned and implemented by the government.
“Some people take the development and facilities provided by the government for granted. They must learn to appreciate those who have helped, as all religions teach their followers to be grateful and thankful.
“There are some people with anti-establishment sentiments who are driven by hate politics, especially the youth, who return to their home states and influence their parents on polling day.
“They want development to be implemented, but are influenced by hate politics and make a different choice when the time comes (on polling day).”
He reminded people not to be influenced by certain quarters who came to secure votes only during elections.
“The Barisan Nasional government and police share the same qualities. They serve the people all year long, not like the opposition, which appears only during certain times.”
