THE Welfare Association of Wives of Ministers and Deputy Ministers (Bakti) contributed RM20,000 to Gurpuri Foundation, an orphanage and home for underprivileged children.

The contribution was handed over by Bakti president Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor during a visit to the home in Ampang, Selangor, yesterday, in conjunction with the Vaisakhi celebration of the Sikhs.

Rosmah handed over hampers to children of the home.

During the one-hour visit, Rosmah and Bakti members were treated to traditional dance performances by the children.

Gurpuri Foundation founder Giani Sukhdaiv Singh expressed his appreciation to Rosmah and Bakti for the contribution and for visiting the home.

He said Bakti members had visited the home annually for the past 16 years, especially during Vaisakhi.

“With the help from Bakti and other donors, we can care for underprivileged children and provide them with education and daily needs.”

Sukhdaiv said the home, established in 2000, housed 80 children aged between 5 and 22.

He said the home was developing a 6.88ha land in Bentong, Pahang, which would cater to elderly and single mothers, apart from the orphans and underprivileged children.

Gurpuri Foundation is the only Sikh-run welfare home for children in Malaysia and outside of India.
