Tan chides opposition leaders who ‘escape to new constituencies’

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Gerakan Youth wing has lambasted opposition leaders for switching and contesting new seats in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Its chief, Tan Keng Liang, said the opposition leaders should take the responsibility and not escape to a new constituency.

By running away, Tan said, the opposition leaders were depriving their voters the right to evaluate their performance in the past five years.

“Do not run away. Be fair to your constituency. Allow them to judge you,” said Tan yesterday.

He was commenting on the trend among some opposition leaders who would contest in new constituencies instead of defending their seats.

It was reported that Yeo Bee Yin will not defend her Damansara Utama state seat, but will instead stand as a DAP candidate in the Bakri parliamentary constituency.

It was also announced that Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir will contest the Jitra state seat instead of defending his Ayer Hitam seat in Kedah.

He has also been named as the possible candidate for the Jerlun parliamentary seat.

Tan added that many “frivolous excuses” were given by these opposition leaders.

“What happens to their unfulfilled promises, made in the last general election? We urge the opposition to allow voters to judge their performance,” he said.
