Upgraded Navy app to make reporting sea emergency easier

-

KUALA LUMPUR: Sea Alert, a feature of the homegrown mobile application K3M 2.0, is expected to be a hit among fishermen, and shipping and oil and gas firms.

Unveiled by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein at the 16th Defence Services Asia Exhibition and Conference and National Security Asia 2018 here yesterday, K3M 2.0 is used primarily to monitor vessels and report emergencies at sea.

It is an upgraded version of K3M (awareness, safety and community) launched less than a year ago.

Royal Malaysian Navy Information Communication Technology director Captain Dr Hisyam Harun said the user-friendly app was 100 per cent Malaysian.

“It does not rely on telecommunication towers. Direct satellite link gives users limitless coverage at sea and 24-hour communication with our command centre.”

Hisyam said the application worked by sending a ping to the command centre. A naval officer would respond within minutes. The satellite automatically locks on to the location of the sender and makes it easier to send help.

Sea Alert is part of the department’s Security and Maritime Community Awareness programme organised in collaboration with Telekom Malaysia Bhd.

Hisyam said the free app was available in Malay, English and Chinese languages on Google Play.

“On a trip to Brunei last month, I conducted a presentation on Sea Alert. The authorities there were impressed and are thinking of using it.”
