Paulus has a mission of his own

- Fauzi Ferzalfie

coach Paulus Firman has his very own target as he made a return to the BAM.

He aims to strengthen the reserve and back-up squads, so as to unearth more pairs that are as good, if not better than Olympic silver medallists Goh V ShemTan Wee Kiong.

“Even though I have worked here before, I still feel that this time round, there will be new challenges for me to take up,” said Paulus in Bukit Kiara yesterday.

The coach worked with BAM for 10 months before deciding to leave in 2013.

Paulus, who officially began his duties with BAM yesterday, will be working together with national men’s doubles head coach, Cheah Soon Kit and coach Vountus Indra Mawan Saniru.

“We want to unearth and develop new players who can mature and become champions.

“At the same time I also have my own short and long term targets that I must achieve.

“At the same time, we want to bring up the standards of the back-up and reserve squad players step by step,” said Paulus, who prior to returning to Malaysia, worked with the Philippines national team for four years.

Paulus said BAM approached him for his services during the Asia Team Championship in Alor Star in February.

Paulus, who was sad to leave the Philippines, said: “It was tough for me to bid farewell to the players over there.

“I have to say that I am satisfied to have been able to play a part in nurturing and developing new talent between the ages of 14 and 15 years old.”
