TM targets to produce regional champion companies
KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) is committed to producing regional champion companies among local vendors under its Bumiputera Vendor Development Programme (BVDP) this year.
The company is optimistic that this can be achieved through collaborations between vendors, local and international companies.
TM is one of the anchor companies responsible for producing vendors who are champions at the national, regional and international levels.
Its group chief procurement officer Mohamad Mohamad Zain said to date, more than 400 vendors have been equipped with training and development, skills enhancement as well as access to the market.
“Currently, there are 105 vendors participating in the programme. TM has turned two of them into national champions,” he said.
The two companies are Binaan Desjaya Sdn Bhd and Lite Kabel Sdn Bhd.
Through the BVDP, TM awarded contracts worth almost RM7 billion to Bumiputera vendors from 2014 to last year.
More than RM2 billion in revenue was generated by the vendors and over 8,000 job opportunities created, he said.
Meanwhile, International Trade and Industry Ministry director for small and medium enterprises, Khairulnizam Hashim, said it aims to produce at least one global, three regional and 10 national champion companies via its Vendor Development and Empowerment Programme (PPV) this year.
“Last year, 21 anchor companies joined PPV and successfully appointed 1,418 vendors.
“Thanks to the participation of the anchor companies, the vendors managed to record a turnover of RM30.44 billion,” he said.
