Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers director

Sim Polenn said the value of the bid was competitive to allow all art fans to bid.

“We’ve seen an increase in young bidders and I think we need to make art accessible to everyone, hence, the low bidding price. Usually, we source the paintings from collectors and auction off top Malaysian works, ranging from abstract paintings to sculptures.

“This time, the auction offers acclaimed works that include Serangga Series by Abdul Latiff Mohidin, who is the first Southeast Asian artist to be featured at Centre Pompidou’s In-Focus Gallery in Paris, France. We have also Awang Damit Ahmad’s 2008 work, Northern Journey (Iraga S eries ), which will be auctioned off with the opening bid at RM110,000,” Sim told the New Straits Times Press at the launch of the Malaysian and Southeast Asian art auction exhibition at Galeri Prima, Balai Berita yesterday.

He said the auction featured young, local talent, such as Fadilah Karim, as part of its efforts to encourage budding artists.
