KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia Bhd net profit rose 12.62 per cent to RM63.78 million for the first quarter ended March 2018, from RM56.63 million in the same period a year ago, mainly due to higher operating revenue.

Operating revenue grew 7.5 per cent to RM144.8 million in the quarter, the highest since its listing in 2005.

Chief executive officer Datuk Seri Tajuddin Atan said the first quarter of the year had seen Average Daily Trading Value (ADV) for the Securities Market’s OnMarket Trades (OMT) hitting RM2.7 billion.

“Our strategic initiatives continued to show progress, reflected by the continued growth in the capital market,” he said.

“The measure announced by the government this year to liberalise and boost the capital market is an opportunity that complements our areas of focus and provides us the impetus to continue delivering on our promise to develop a sustainable marketplace and enhance the breadth and depth of the ecosystem,” said Tajuddin.

For the quarter under review, the Securities Market trading revenue grew 13.5 per cent to RM76.3 million, from RM67.2 million in the previous quarter.

This was driven by higher ADV for OMT which grew 14.2 per cent.

Non-trading revenue increased 7.9 per cent to RM45.6 million, from RM42.3 million, contributed by higher listing and issuer services fees and depository services fees.

The Derivatives Market trading revenue declined 10.5 per cent to RM19.0 million in the first quarter, from RM21.2 million in the previous quarter due to lower number of traded derivatives contracts.

Average Daily Contracts for the Derivatives Market were at 54,020 compared with 62,076 last year, decreasing 13 per cent.

As for the Islamic Capital Market, Bursa Suq Al-Sila’, trading revenue increased marginally 0.1 per cent to RM4 million mainly due to volume-based pricing introduced in December 2016.
