Pact’s decision-making chaotic, says analyst

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP’s dominance in the opposition pact is making it difficult for the latter to achieve what Barisan Nasional has been successful at all this years.

Political analyst Dr Kamarul Zaman Yusoff said the opposition’s decision-making process was chaotic, seeing that DAP held the biggest influence among the lot.

This, he said, could be seen through the number of seats that had been allocated to the party for the 14th General Election (GE14).

“DAP holds the most seats. Its candidates are expected to win and that is why it is seen as more confident.

“It has raised all sorts of issues without any objections from other component parties. An example is the announcement of the three DAP members who will be appointed as ministers if it were to win.

“Nobody questioned this despite the fact that this needs the agreement of all component parties,” he said, adding that this was the exact opposite of BN, which had always raised the issue and discussed it first at the Supreme Council level before making any announcements.

Kamarul said the opposition’s agenda benefited DAP and could cause chaos among people, especially Malays, if it were to win GE14.

“We all know that DAP has been fighting for a Malaysian Malaysia, or equal rights. This means that it has no agenda focusing on Malays in its 60 listed promises.

“Surely, this will not be accepted by the majority of Bumiputeras, but Malays in the opposition today are forced to keep their mouths shut,” he said.

Another analyst, Professor Datuk Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani, said the opposition could not govern a country based on its experience of handling two states.

“It needs to learn a few things from BN to become a good governing party. Handling a state and a country are two completely different things,” he said.

“BN can do this because it has been doing it a long time.”

In Kota Baru, Umno information chief Tan Sri Annuar Musa said DAP was the reason behind the split in Pas’ ranks, and this could especially be seen in the fact that Nik Omar Nik Aziz, son of the former menteri besar and Pas spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, was now contesting on a PKR ticket.

He said DAP could be seen as trying to pull Pas members away from the Islamic party as soon as it had left the opposition pact.

“Such is its influence that even brothers like Nik Omar and Nik Abduh could be separated,” he said.

“This all stems from the manipulation of DAP. Its aim is to break up Malay votes, even if it has to accept political leaders it despises.

“Before, it was against Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, but now it accepts him?

“It knows that Dr Mahathir can live only so long more, at his age. It wants to use him to break up the Malays and strengthen itself.”

Annuar, who is defending his Ketereh parliamentary seat, said these things had been more or less confirmed by DAP leaders in their talks recently.

He said if the people gave DAP power, the socialist party would put into place all its policies, including those which were antiIslam.

“At this point in time, DAP is not too powerful, so it is just following along with their ‘friends’ in the opposition pact.

“But, once it gets hold of power, it will surely put its policies in place.

“DAP has consistently put forward its policies that are based on socialism and wants to end Malay special rights, which is completely the opposite of Umno’s struggles, which are in line with the constitution.”
