EC: EARLY VOTER TURNOUT IS 83PC

More than 270,000 police, military personnel vote at 585 polling centres

EARLY voting for the 14th General Election (GE14) ended smoothly yesterday. The Election Commission said voter turnout was 83 per cent.

A total of 278,590 people from the two uniform branches can vote yesterday. The total number of early voters is 300,255, of whom 21,665 are postal voters.

Those from the military include 110,277 in the army, 22,499 (navy) and 19,581 (air force).

There are 111,702 early voters from the police, including spouses.

Some 6,376 election officers handled the process at 585 polling centres with 910 voting channels.

Ballots were cast as early as 8am and ended at 7pm. A few polling stations closed earlier than scheduled.

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun cast his vote at the Persatuan Kebajikan Isteri-isteri Polis building in Bukit Aman here.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim and former IGP Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar were among the voters there.

At SK Kementah here, Defence Ministry personnel arrived in droves. Present were Armed Force chief General Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor, his deputy, Lieutenant­General Datuk Seri Ahmad Hasbullah Mohd Nawawi, and Royal Malaysian Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Ahmad Kamarulzam­an Ahmad Badaruddin.

In Putrajaya, district police chief Assistant Commission­er Rosly Hassan was among 823 personnel voting.

In Lumut, 11,223 personnel from the Royal Malaysian Navy headquarte­rs cast their votes at SMK Pangkalan TLDM Lumut and SK Pangkalan TLDM.

Barisan Nasional candidate for the Lumut parliament­ary seat and Pangkor state seat Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir monitored the election process.

In George Town, 2nd Division Chief Major-General Datuk Mohd Ramli Jaafar joined 2,117 rank and file and their spouses for early voting.

In Kuala Selangor, 446 rankand-file police personnel cast their votes at the Kuala Selangor Ddistrict police station, Kuala Selangor district police station club and the Tanjong Karang police station.

Present were Kuala Selangor BN candidate Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim, and Selangor BN chairman and candidate for the Tanjong Karang parliament­ary seat candidate Tan Sri Noh Omar.
