Chinese want Latiff as Wakaf Tapai rep
MARANG: The Chinese in Wakaf Tapai know what they want.
“We do not want to say much. The Chinese in Wakaf Tapai will repay the services of YB (A. Latiff Awang) by selecting him as the people’s representative for another five years.
“We are pleased with his services. We will vote for the Barisan Nasional candidate,” said Marang MCA chairman Ng Soo Che, 54.
He said Latiff ’s services meant a lot to the Chinese here.
“The Chinese here trust Latiff, who had served them well.
“He is not one who sweet talks as the 14th General Election draws near, but one who has proven that he can deliver the people’s needs.”
Referring to the BN candidate as Cikgu Latiff, Ng said the former had approved the construction of a three-storey block for a school, built a road, renovated houses and provided wheelchairs for the needy.
“In short, Cikgu Latiff has the interests of the people at heart.
“It will be a loss if we do not support him to become assemblyman for Pengkalan Berangan.”
A total of 1,118 Chinese at Wakaf Tapai will vote at SK Wakaf Tapai on polling day.
In the last general election, BN obtained 58 per cent of the votes in Wakaf Tapai.
Accounts clerk Liaw Yoke Chee, 40, was pleased with Latiff’s contributions towards education.
“One of the most unforgettable instances was Latiff’s personal assistance to pupils at his alma mater SJK(C) Chong Hwa in Wakaf Tapai.
“He is approachable and is serious about improving education,” said Liaw, who hoped Latiff would continue to be their assemblyman.
Latiff was born on Nov 11, 1960 in Kampung Binjai Rendah here.
He is married to Norlia Harun, a housewife. The couple have five children — sons Ahmad Syamir, Amirul Syarif and Muhd Idham Muiz, and daughters Aimi Dayang and Nur Farisha.
He had served as the Terengganu education, science, technology and government transformation committee chairman, under the administration of Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.
Latiff holds a Bachelor’s degree in Education (grooming and counselling) from Universiti Putra Malaysia and was a teacher from 1991.
In 2006, he worked for two years as a confidential secretary to the then deputy human resources minister before entering politics.
