WELSON ON FIRE
Sarawakian cracks national record despite injury
NATIONAL swimmer Welson Sim smashed his own national record in the National Swimming Championships at the Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil yesterday.
Spurred on by a cheering crowd, Welson clocked 1:47.97 in the 200m freestyle to erase his own record of 1:48.50 clocked in June last year.
"The record came as a surprise to me because I am carrying an ankle injury picked up at the Commonwealth Games. I did not expect it.
“However, the cheering crowd motivated me to give my best," said the Sarawakian.
"It was also my best time this year but sadly I could not do it at the Commonwealth Games, which could have taken me to the final.
"Maybe I was too nervous at the iGold Coast and missed a golden opportunity."
