SEGAMAT: Race, religion and language are no barriers for Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam to mingle with people in the Segamat parliamentary constituency, which he has represented for the last three terms.

His background as a doctor enables him to get close to the community and understand their problems, regardless of their race.

His presence in the constituency and his concern about issues in the area brought him closer to the people.

Batu Anam Youth Association chairman Mohd Aidil Othman said the people in Segamat, especially the youth, did not have any problem with the Barisan Nasional candidate because he paid attention to them.

“Whenever we invite him to a programme, he will attend without protocol.

“He also provides allocation for their needs.

“Besides that, he has close ties with Malays because he considers them his relatives, even though he is an Indian.

“That is why we are have no problem communicating with him.”

Aidil said during Dr Subramaniam’s tenure, the community was pleased with his performance as he brought development and prosperity to the constituency.

Segamat Specialist Hospital Board of Visitors (Psychiatry) member Noor Salihin Cholan said the community was enjoying (double) benefit as the MP was also the health minister.

She said Dr Subramaniam’s initiatives and commitment to healthcare was consolidated when Segamat Hospital was upgraded to a specialist hospital.

“People do not have to travel far to get treatment from specialists. “Dr Subramaniam cares for the people’s wellbeing, especially in healthcare and promoting a healthy lifestyle.”

She said he was tolerant and encouraged hospitals to implement the “Hospital Mesra Ibadah” programme, which allows Muslim patients to perform their religious duties while seeking treatment.

Segamat District Village Heads Association chairman Baharom Ahmad said Dr Subramaniam was well-liked by the villagers because of his openness in meeting everyone.
