Enough of ups and downs

- Fabian Peter

No 1 men's doubles Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong may have their ups and downs but they are ready to put aside their differences for the Thomas Cup challenge in Bangkok on May 2027.

The Rio Olympic Games silver medallists reached their peak when they won the Denmark Open and World Super Series Final in 2016 to move up to World No 1, but things have since gone downhill for the duo.

As a result, the pair were split last September by BAM. However, with the Asian Games and Thomas Cup in mind, the BAM reunited the pair earlier this year, and they experienced some hits and misses.

Since the start of the year, the World No 15 have reached one final (Malaysia Masters), two semi-finals (Thailand Masters and German Open), and three quarter-finals.

Wee Kiong, said: "We have our ups and downs, but I don't think it's anything major.

"What's more important is for us to gel well as a team. The Thomas Cup is unlike other tournaments. We must win as a team, and if we lose, lose as a team.

"Anything is possible. We have to be ready to follow our coaches’ instructions. If the coaches decide to scratch us, then we have to be up for it."

Malaysia are in Group D with defending champions Denmark, Russia and Algeria.

On how important it is to finish as group winners, Wee Kiong said: ‘Well for now, that is our target. We want to finish as group winners to secure our seeding for the quarter-finals.

"Denmark will be our biggest challenge, but we are ready.”

Apart from V Shem-Wee Kiong, the other men's doubles players in the team are youngsters Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, Teo Ee Yi and Arif Latif.
