THE newly-formed Federal Government should not be obsessed with the country’s economic growth, but instead, address issues of poverty and growing disparity in society.

Consumers Association of Penang president S.M. Mohamed Idris said the new government should also look into the country’s environmental issues.

“It (the government) must put an end to crony capitalism and wage a war on corruption, particularly among politicians and senior government officials.

“As the Arabic saying goes... ‘A fish rots from the head down’.

“I appeal to the elected representatives to work together for the empowerment and welfare of the people, and set aside their personal and party interests,” he said here yesterday.

He congratulated Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on his appointment as the country’s seventh prime minister.

He said Dr Mahathir’ had the experience in leading the country and would push Malaysia to greater heights and pave the way for a smooth succession.

“I thank Allah and would like to congratulate Malaysians for participating in the democratic process to elect a new government.

“We have set a good example to other countries to emulate, especially Muslim states that are ruled by dictators and absolute monarchs.

“We should be proud of our achievement.”
